The Promise Ring - Why Did Ever We Meet? (official video)
This video was played on MTV’s 120 Minutes exactly once. According to legend, it only even got that one play because a friend of the band’s worked at MTV and managed to work around the official channels for video approval and get the video directly to the 120 Minutes staff. I don’t know how true that is, but until running across it on youtube just now, I had never actually seen this video. The band plays football in it! I remember seeing The Promise Ring once, and Davy started talking about how great the Vikings were doing (that was the season they went 15-1, and then lost their first playoff game). I was in the front row and started razzing him immediately. He seemed startled, mostly that anyone in the room had understood what he was talking about. Then he was like, “Let me guess—Redskins?” (This was at a show in DC.) And I said something like, “GODDAMN RIGHT!” That ended the conversation. I’m awesome sometimes.
One of my favorite Promise Ring songs. I too came across this video for the first time recently. Can’t remember why/where, but I do remember buying this album on Dec. 28, 1998 (went record shopping for a friend’s birthday that day), along with a used Garden Variety LP from Flipside Records near Wayne, New Jersey. Love the “120 Minutes” legend. Maybe the video will get a second wind when the show returns after all these years? “Sike!”
