So today is Tom McGeveran’s and Josh Benson’s last day at The New York Observer. Tom is like the super cool older cousin who gave you your first Sonic Youth tape when you were 12. More importantly, he gave me a job and taught me a lot and is the best drinking buddy a guy could ask for. Josh is like the favorite high school sports coach I never had. And, same as with Tom, I can say that...
The Court Tavern was saved
I spent many nights and played many shows at this place during the first half of the decade.
From Brooklyn Vegan via nj.com:
For nearly 50 years the Court Tavern has been a New Brunswick fixture. Since the early 1980s it also has been a vital part of the state’s rock scene, hosting up-and-coming bands such as the Smithereens, which later returned the favor by donating one of its platinum...
These Are My Top 10 Albums of the '00s
10. Morrissey - Ringleader of the Tormentors. The second installment in Morrissey’s “comeback” phase of the mid-’00s. On March 13, 2006, I was at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Okla., when he played many of these songs live for the first time. This one still fucks me up a little:
9. The Black Heart Procession - Three. I was only casually into BHP when this album came...

I have always been a Hardcore Commemorator, which is why I feel like I have a right, if not an obligation, to be constructing “top” lists at this time of the year even if it’s something that’s getting really old right about now. It’s just something I was born doing. In elementary school I would sit at the...

….It pains me to say but I do agree with your friend’s “just OK” assessment which was frustrating since the Thorns of Life material was soooo good and I thought I had read somewhere before (or maybe it was just wishful thinking) that they were carrying over at least some of those songs. I couldn’t have been more prepared to jump on the backs...

Took off work on Thursday and am heading down to P.Rex for the first time in forevs. Then to Triumph Brewery for the seven-beer sampler!
Some random (and all pretty good!) CDs that are going to the used bin: Television, Marquee Moon; MC5, Kick Out the Jams; The Only Ones, Special View; The Jam, This is the Modern World; Magazine, Real Life and Secondhand Daylight; Dub Narcotic Sound System w/ The...
In the middle of an impromptu Friday night ’90s hardcore/emo/screamo vinyl nostalgia fest with infinite jess. So far: Jawbreaker. Jets to Brazil. Braid. The Promise Ring. Piebald. Instil. The Jazz June. I Hate Myself. C.R. Avail.
Up next: Charles Bronson and Los Crudos.
Two dreams last night: One was this recurring zombie adventure semi-nightmare I have every few months or so. That was followed by a less frequent recurring dream in which I’m shaving but the razor is dull and I can’t get all the stubble off my face so I get really frustrated. (I did in fact shave yesterday.) What do these mean?
Initial thoughts: I would put “Sunny” and “Sing Your Life” waaaaaay higher on the list and nix a lot of the Quarry/Ringleader-era b-sides altogether. I’m also slightly disturbed by the conspicuous absence of “Speedway” and “The Boy Racer.” Still awesome though.

Simon Doonan is decking the halls of the White House:
Mr. Doonan, the creative director of Barneys New York and a tart-tongued columnist in The New York Observer, was selected several months ago to organize this year’s public displays for the holidays, the Obamas’ first in the White House, according to a person familiar with the planning.
